Valuing and motivating Freelance Staff

It is difficult to keep everyone motivated when we work across the UK with freelance staff. The challenge is increased by the short programmes and the seasonal nature of the work. We have tried a number of schemes over the years as we know that the most important part of our business is the trainers working face to face with our clients.

The key solution is communication. The underlying style of the company is that of openness and everyone in the company has time to discuss any feedback or ideas you may have.

Below we have listed a few methods of rewarding staff who work with us. It aims to reward loyalty and good work. No one system is perfect and we are all open to any other ideas you may have.

• Repeat bookings
  As a company we can provide repeat business to trainers when clients re-book. In these cases we try to locate the original staff who ran the previous course. This keeps continuity with the client and ensures staff feel respected and valued.
  
  
• Feedback
  Where possible we provide feedback to staff after courses. This is difficult for short programmes however after long courses this is normally achieved within two weeks.
  
  
• CO-OP Concept
  The CO-OP idea was launched in 2001 as a method of supporting staff who are evolving their own client base or business. The idea is that the ECG team support the venture though logistics, kit, administration, insurance and licences for a set fee. This enables the trainer to focus on the training aspect whilst maintaining the client's business. For more details contact Peter Harvey.
  
  
• Training Miles
  Training Miles are built up by working on UK courses, as per the table below. These can be then transferred on to training courses offered by the ECG companies. These include First Aid courses, Manual Handling refreshers, Health and Safety updates, ML courses, Personal Development training (Belbin, MBTI) and so on.
