The office is set up to support the delivery trainers. We work for you by giving you the right equipment, information and support to enable you to deliver the best training you can. Sounds cheesy but that is our approach and it is at the core of our reputation.

Apprentice Scheme

The apprentice scheme started in 1998 and has evolved over the years. The principle is to enable people to gain an understanding of the industry before committing time and money. Once people have decided on their career, the second stage supports them whilst they gain career qualifications such as the Summer Mountain Leader Award through the MLTB (Mountain Leader Training Board).

Level 1
This level focuses on giving the apprentice an understanding of the industry. This involves working at the office in Berkshire shadowing staff. Half of their time will be spent out on programme and the remainder of the time on projects in the office and equipment store. Accommodation and a monthly payment will be provided.

Level 2
This level is for people who have decided on a career in the outdoor / training industry and have demonstrated a commitment via a Degree, HND or experience in the industry. The role links delivery time on programme alongside undertaking career courses. The position is salaried and open to one or two apprentices each twelve months.

The annual interview process takes place in June and July and placements normally start in August or September. If you are interested in the scheme please contact Richard at the Office on 01344 774430.

Freelance Trainers

The ECG group uses approximately 50 freelance trainers during each year across a wide range of disciplines and skills. We are always keen to meet and work with new trainers and would welcome applications at any time of year.

The skills and experience required varies across the companies. Therefore, we have experienced personal development trainers and MIA's on the books.

From a tax and legal point of view, freelance trainers must be self employeed and be able to produce evidence of self assessed stats or schedual D number. If you have any concerns please contact Christine for guidance.

We run induction road shows annually in the South and North of the UK. Jon Parry co-ordinates these and is the best point of contact for this work.

Part-time Trainers

To increase the security for freelance staff we began offering part-time contracts to staff in 2002. This is in the form of a guarenteed number of days per year for a fixed monthly salary. The security comes at a cost - in the form of a slightly reduced day rate. Full employee rights are given to part-time staff including PAYE. For full details request our staff handbook.

The specifics are down to the individual and trainers need to have a track record with Wilderness for consideration. There is a fair amount of trust and diary planning required.

Full-time Trainers and Support Staff

The full-time staff enjoy a number of benefits on top of the normal salary payment. These include gym membership, training budget, BUPA in year 2, Pension membership and contributions after year 1, lunches and staff training trips.

Posts are advertised a few times a year. However we are a small team of 15 so there are limited vacancies and these are normally dependant on growth in the satellite businesses. View the vacancies page for current openings.
